Introduction

Calcium is found in seawater naturally and is used by stoney corals to build the skeleton in which they live. Levels of calcium in an aquarium should be maintained through supplementation as it is depleted by any organism consuming it. Levels of 350 – 400 parts per million (PPM) are recommended. Some aquarists will push levels of calcium to 425 or 450. Caution should be used when pushing calcium levels because there is a risk of the calcium falling out of solution. This occurrence is often referred to as snow and is actually when the water column cannot hold any more calcium as a liquid and the calcium turns solid and falls out of the water column resembling a snowing effect in the tank.

This event is also known as crashing due to the fact that other parameters will become affected, such as the PH and alkalinity of the water column.
