Is it a Pest?

Major Pest, has some value as an exporter of nutrients. Utilizes organic substrates, assimilates organic carbon, and loves reeftank lighting that has begun to degrade. Siphoning algae mats with a small dia. tube during water changes, the use of RO/DI water,a good skimmer, strong water flow, oxygenation and the reduction of phosphates, silicates, nitrates are the first steps to elimination. Growing desirable Macro Algae will help out compete Blue Green algae by reducing levels of nutrient

Known Predators

Low at this time there are no known predators of Cyano.

Cultivation

Self propagating, usually carried in with new arrivals and is also airborne.

FAQ

Causes:

  • Nutrients, especially phosphates, silicates, nitrates, organic carbon and detrius
  • Lack of Flow
  • Old actinic lighting
  • Inefficient protein skimming/overstocking/overfeeding (nutrient causes)
