Epaulette shark

Scientific Name Hemiscyllium ocellatum

Max. Size: about 42 inches/ 107 cm

Tank Size: For Juveniles at least 180 gallons, for a single adult - about 600 gallons.

Aggression: Generally very peaceful.

Hardiness: Very hardy species

Reef-Safe: yes - if reef is anchered.

Available as captive-bred: yes - captive bred pups are sometimes available

Physical Description

A hemiscyllidae shark with a short snout and nasal barbels. The upper body is yellow to brown speckled with widely spaced dark brown spots. A large black ocellus (eyespot or eye-like marking) is present above each pectoral fin.


Distribution

Indo-pacific region - Australia, New Guinea, & Indonesia.

Behavior

Relatively peaceful species - that prefers to hang out in coral reefs, rocky reefs and tidal pools.

Feeding

feeds on benthic invertebrates, and very small benthic fishes.

Breeding

This species is known to be oviparous. Pups are born at about 6 inches in length.

Social Structure

Can be solitary or live in small groups. But males tend to be a bit territorial especially during breeding season.

Additional Notes

This species is the largest of all hemiscyllidae sharks. And it's the most common member of it's genus(Hemiscyllium). It's also a popular shark often found in LFS, and private aquariums.
