Taxonomic Stuff you know you Care About
- Family: Gobiidae
- Genus: Nemateleotris
- Species: Magnifica
Behavior
These fish are typically shy fish. They are often seen swimming against a current in the tank waiting for food to float by. If spooked, the will dart (hence the name 'dartfish') into a hole in the rock work that they have chosen as their hiding spot. They will typically dart into this hole shortly after lights out and remain there for the rest of the night.
Caution: These fish are known jumpers! If you plan to keep one of these fish, the top of your aquarium should have a cover or something preventing the fish from jumping out. They can fit through surprisingly small holes and have a great aim so take caution. Be careful when acclimating them so they don't jump out of the shipping bag.
Feeding
Firefish like to eat food that floats by them. Placing food up current from them so that it will float to them is an easy way to feed them.
They should be fed small meaty foods such as Mysis and Brine shrimp. Formula One small pellets are the perfect size for them as well.
