Whitespotted Bamboo

Scientific Name: Chiloscyllium plagiosum

Max. Size: About 37 inches/ 94 cm

Tank Size: For pups at least 150 gallons, for an adult at least 480 gallons.

Aggression: Known to be aggressive during feeding time, but usually fairly peaceful.

Hardiness:

Very hardy species. 

Reef-Safe: Yes - but is known to knock over corals.

Available as captive-bred: Yes - captive bred pups are available.

Physical Description

Classic bamboo shark appearance, - as juveniles - coloarion is black/dark brown with white spots. As Adults - coloration is tan/light brown with medium/dark brown bands and small whitish spots.

Distribution

Indo-Pacific region - Japan, to Indonesia, to Thailand to India.

Behavior

They are a fairly active species for a Hemiscyllid, and tend to be more active that most other Bamboos. But they still aren't as active as the Horn Sharks or Nurse sharks.

Feeding

Known to feed off benthic Invertebrates - Shrimp, crab, clams, & octopi, also made eat small benthic fish.

Breeding

known to be oviparous

Social Structure

they have been known to live in small groups - although in home aquaria it's best to only have in male per tank, as it's possible that there maybe some aggression between adult males - during breeding seasons.

Additional Notes

This is the 2nd most popular Bamboo shark sold in LFS. Sometimes sold in LFS under the name of Marbled Bamboo. This species is one of the best suited sharks for home aquaria. And is often consider a good introductory species in to keeping sharks.
