[edit] Port jackson sharkScientific Name Heterodontus portusjacksoni Max. Size: 5.4 feet/1.65 meters, but rarely exceeds 4.5 feet/1.37 meters. Tank Size: Pups at least 300 gallon tank. Adults need at least 1,800 gallons. Aggression: Known to be aggressive feeders, and more active swimmer than bamboo sharks. But tend to have a very peaceful temperment. Hardiness: A very hardy species, so long as water temps are under 72F, they are given proper vitamin/mineral supplements. Reef-Safe: Not really Available as captive-bred: Possible - but none known at this time. |
Physical Description
A heterodontid with medium brown coloration, and a unique pattern, consisting of a black/dark brown harness0like markings on the back and flanks.
Distribution
Coastal waters near and around Southern Australia.

Behavior
Large heterodontid, fairly active noturnal predator of mainly benthic invertebrates and small benthic fishes. While this tend to be a bit docile when around humans.
Feeding
Primarily feeds on benthic invertebrates - such as Sea Urchins, Sea Stars, Shrimps, lobsters, Mollucks, & Octopuses. Also known to feed on small benthic bony fishes.
Breeding
Known to be oviparous, laying up to 16 eggs in a single season. They have are a corkscrew shaped egg case. After about 9-12 months - the eggs hatch. They young are about 9 inches (24 cm) at birth. Pups often grow at a rate of about 2-3 inches year - so it may take nearly a decade to reach maturity.
Social Structure
None to be social with their own species in and out side of breeding season. Tend to be found in larger groups as pups.

Additional Notes
This species is largest known member of the Heterodontid family. It's still a good species of large saltwater Aquariums. But better suited for experienced shark aquarists.
