The most important aspect of starting a reef tank (or freshwater for that matter) is planning appropriately to provide the best environment for your animals. To that end for reefing, recommended books:

The Concientious Marine Aquarist

  • by Bob Fenner

A great first overview to give the reader a basis to start the planning process.

I would also recommend The Reef Aquarium by Charles Delbeek and Julian Sprung - volumes 1 and 2 is a great summary on care of specific animals (invertebrates) while vol. 3 goes into a lot of detail and research done on advantages of different types of displays and equipment and supplementation.

Scott Michael's Reef Fishseries although not complete is my favorite place to find info on specific fish, to look for care, and compatability. His quick guide, Marine Fishes is a well thumbed through quick reference guide.
