Introduction

Specific gravity (SG) is a special case of relative density defined as the ratio of the density of a given substance, to the density of water. Substances with a specific gravity greater than 1 are heavier than water, and those with a specific gravity of less than 1 are lighter than water.

Based on the SG-value of a given substance, the density of that substance can be calculated.

Reef aquaria requires a SG level of 1.021 - 1.025. The inhabitants living within the water column should determine the level of salinity required. Always research your tank mates and make sure the ones you want to place in your aquarium will thrive at the salinity level you choose to keep your water column at. A Hydrometer or Refractometer should be used to test the SG of the water column. Any adjustments in the salinity level of the water column, ahould always be done slowly.
