The ideal temperature for reef aquaria is between 76 and 84 degrees Fahrenheit. In recent years, reef keepers have been keeping their tanks towards the higher temperatures of 82-84F specifically in SPS ( Small Polyped Stoney)coral tanks. One should also keep the temperatures stable in their closed environment as it can cause undo stress to your inhabitants. Temperature swings of 2-3 degrees are acceptable.

The ambient temperature of the room that your aquarium is in can have both a positive and negative effect on your temperature as well. An Example of this is a room that is not air conditioned during summer months can in fact raise the temperature. While an room that is air conditioned during summer months can help to keep temperatures stable.

There are several different ways reef keepers have used to keep the temperatures stable in their tanks. The use of a chiller, although the more expensive option, seems to be the most used option. Another option is fans blowing across the surface of your tank and works much the same way you would blow on a hot bowl of soup to cool it off. Lastly, another option is fill(clean and sterilized) 2 liter bottles in your reef that have been filed with water and then frozen.
